Decide on the diamond quality by considering the 4C’s of diamonds
Carats
The carat of a diamond is essentially the weight of the diamond.
One carat equals 0.2 grams or 200 milligrams.
Color
The color of a diamond refers to how much color the diamond lets through.
A colorless diamond will let through more light and be more valuable.
Clarity
The clarity of a diamond indicates the number of flaws a diamond has.
Flaws are either inclusions (naturally occurring) or blemishes (incurred at the time of cutting).
Cut
Although generally confused with the shape, the cut of a diamond refers to the reflective qualities of the diamond.
Good finishes and angels in a cut provide brilliance to the diamond.

Determine the diamond cut shape
The diamond shape is commonly referred to as the diamond cut but is not to be confused with the cut discussed under the 4C’s of Diamonds. Some of the most popular diamond shapes are:
Emerald Cut Shape
This stylish cut creates rectangular facets that beautifully accentuated the stone’s clarity.
Oval Cut Shape
Optimizes carat, giving the illusion of a larger stone.
Marquise Cut Shape
Elongate the finger of the wearer maintaining an appearance of great size and grandeur.
Round Brilliant Cut Shape
The cut with the optimum light refraction and sparkle.
Pear Cut Shape
Combining the brilliance and design of the Round and the Marquise cuts
Heart Shape Cut

Radiant Cut Shape
The most brilliant of the rectangular cut diamonds.

Consider engagement ring styles and/or setting
Ring styles refer to the overall design or aesthetic of the engagement ring. It encompasses the visual appearance, shape, and overall theme of the ring. Ring settings refer to how the diamond or gemstone is secured onto the ring. It involves the method and style of attaching the stone to the band. Together, they forms the overall design of the ring.
Halo Engagement Ring
Large stone with smaller stones stones encircling it. It lends additional emphasis and sparkle to the center stone and makes it appear bigger.
Solitaire Engagement Ring
This setting has only one large stone in the middle of the band.
Three Stone Engagement Ring
Usually a larger stone in the middle with two smaller stones on the sides. It traditionally represented the present, future, and past of the couple, with the largest presenting the present.
Hidden Halo Engagement Ring
This setting differs from the halo in the sense that the smaller stones that encircles it, is set below the large stone. It is therefore more visible from the side than the top view.
Pavè Engagement Ring
Pavè is French for paved, so smaller stones are set along the shank of the band in a manner that resembles cobble stones. It gives the appearance of a solid diamond surface because the diamonds are set so closely together.
Side Stone Engagement Ring
Variation of the three stone setting, but can be expanded to include a five-stone ring.
Prong Setting Engagement Ring
Metal claws (prongs) hold the stone in place, allowing more light exposure.
Split-Shank Engagement Ring
The band splits into two as it reaches the center stone. This design can add visual interest and a sense of uniqueness to the ring.

How to measure ring size
In the United States, ring sizes are typically measured using the numerical scale. The standard US ring size chart ranges from size 3 to size 13.5, with each whole and half-size representing a specific circumference or diameter of the finger.
To measure your ring size, you can purchase a ring sizer. You could also measure by using a string, paper or existing ring that fits the intended finger well.
Tips for accurate ring measurement
- Measure your finger at room temperature; fingers can swell in heat.
- Measure your finger at the end of the day when it's typically the largest.
- Consider the width of the band; wider bands generally require a larger size.
- Ring sizes can vary between countries, so make sure you're using the correct measurement system (US, UK, European, etc.).
- Some fingers on the dominant hand may be slightly larger, so measure the specific finger you plan to wear the ring on.
